You Are a Sprinkled Donut

Flamboyant and flashy, you're easily distracted by shiny things.
You're definitely a snazzy number, and you usually catch everyone's eye in the room.
And you've got the goods to back it up your colorful image.
(Though too much of you gives people a stomach ache!)

THE BREAD PHENOMENA

One day, my boss told me with amazement: “What is it about bread in Indonesia?? I thought we eat rice everyday, not bread! But why are people lining up to buy bread everytime I went to this mall?”

So… what about it?? It’s true though, for the last 2 years suddenly we have so many bread brands and yes, people are lining up to buy them! At least I used to he3x Let’s see what’s the ‘hit’ here lately…

J.CO

This is the latest hit in Jakarta. Now it has 5 outlets already in Jakarta. I tasted it first 2 months ago, I bought it at Kelapa Gading. I was just curious cause my cousin kept promoting it to me, said that it’s very good and creamy (he knew I love creamy stuff). I took to opportunity to buy it at KG when I had to meet my office’s tax consultant at KG.

Mind you, I had to queue for about 1 hour before I get to order!! And I when I heard that my cousins were at my house I bought a dozen and also 1/2 dozen of Gale’s order. And I had to say that the donuts were indeed yummy! And creamy!! My favorites were the one with peanut butter fillings (I don’t remember the name) and Al Capone (with Almonds on tops).

I haven’t bought much of it now, though. Not because I don’t like it anymore, it’s just that the queue gets longer and longer… I thought after they had more outlets people wouldn’t be so curious anymore about it, but boy I was wrong! I even had to label it “3 km long donuts” and I meant the line up!! Still, I won’t say no if anyone offer to buy it for me (^___^)

BREAD TALK

Now this one was really a big hit… Even until now people was still lining up at certain hours to buy it. Its hottest product is the FIRE FLOSS. I rarely saw people buying Bread Talk without a single Fire Floss. I don’t really like it though, too hot for me ^^; I like the bread pudding, yeah… I always like the sweet stuff, I have a sweet tooth.

People can also watch how they make the breads through the glass window. It’s interesting, especially for children. A good way of marketing too. Sometimes I see children who’s watching how a certain kind of bread was made and ask their parents to buy them the ‘final form’ or the bread itself ha3x clever, don’t you think?

Interestingly, the owner of Bread Talk’s franchise is the same of J.CO’s: Johny Andrean, who’s originally in the beauty salon business. Not bad or a change of business, huh?

* * * * *

After Bread Talk, suddenly there were Bread Story, Bread King, 2nd Bite and many more small bakers in town… There’s always a new brand every month. Well, not all make it to the top, not unless they have big promotions or products that are really different than what we already have in the market.

Not only bread, but cakes are getting popular too. There are Cheesecake Factory, Harvest or Dapur Cokelat. Everytime I pass those places, the parking lot was always full and it’s a headache especially in holiday! You could wait for about 40 minutes just to get your Tiramisu or Chocolate Cake. By the way, everything chocolatey is always a big hit. The Opera Cake, Triple Chocolate, Chocolate Brownies… anything…

I don't know how long people will still queue to buy these stuff, nevertheless, it’s interesting to watch this business grows. I really wanna see in the next 3 years what new brands are coming up, what’s still hot, will people still line up to buy those brands I mentioned above or there will be new brands with a 5 km long queue (^____^). Till then… I’m going home now and maybe stop by one of the bread shop to buy something for my breakfast tomorrow. Till later everyone…
